Pray for Paris

Paris has been nicknamed the “city of lights” because it was one of the first cities to have gas lights in the streets, specifically 56,000 gas lights in the 1860s. However, in recent years Paris has been far from a “city of lights” from a gospel perspective. Tim Svoboda of YWAM’s City Ministries includes Paris in his list of the top five “Super Giant” cities where his research shows a stronghold of darkness (the others are Kolkata, Moscow, Pyongyang and Tokyo).

Paris PrayRecent events though—terrorist threats and attacks, the financial crisis and the refugee crisis—may be reason for a change, one that YWAM Paris leader Carrie Webb describes as “a definite shift in the spiritual atmosphere of Paris. What used to be an extremely hard ground has been cracked open and a plowing of the field has started.” Carrie also notes the role that prayer and past and present missionaries have played in cracking the ground.

Please join us this month in praying for breakthroughs in Paris.

To prepare to pray, read this account of YWAM’s Summer of Service in Paris to obtain an understanding of the shift in how people are responding to the gospel in Paris.

YWAM Paris DTS students at the Louvre

YWAM Paris DTS students at the Louvre

Also, picture Paris more clearly using these statistics (sources New York Times, Wikipedia, YWAM Archives, Operation World):

  • Over 12 million people live in Paris and the surrounding area making it the largest city in Western Europe.
  • Paris is one of the most culturally diverse cities in Europe. Approximately 20% of its population was born outside France and 41.3% of people under 20 have at least one immigrant parent.
  • 100 migrants arrive daily as of November 2016 with 3,000 camped in tents in just one area of the city.
  • Religious affiliation: high population of atheists and non-religious; 1.7 million Muslims, or 10 – 15% of population; 320,000 Jews, or just under 3% of population; declining Catholic population; 2% of population or less are Evangelicals.

Pray for Paris

YWAM Discipleship Training School students in Paris

YWAM Discipleship Training School students in Paris

Pray for migrant people:

  • Pray for safety and provision for migrant people living in Paris.
  • Pray for police and other workers to have wisdom and grace when working with displaced people.
  • Pray for the hearts of Parisians to be open to welcoming migrant people. Pray that the government would have wisdom and generosity in caring for immigrants.
  • Praise God for the growth of the church amongst the immigrants from Africa. Pray that the Africans can related the Gospel to the French.

Pray about terrorism:

  • Pray for the families of the victims and those who were injured in the Paris bombings last year (November 2015) and the terrible trauma of the Nice lorry attack last summer. In Paris, the attackers killed 130 people, including 89 at the Bataclan theatre. Another 368 people were injured, more than 80 seriously. Pray also for healing and for an awareness of eternal things for people traumatized in Paris as a whole.
  • Pray for those who planned and executed the Paris attacks and for their families that God would reveal the truth to them.

Pray about the occult:

  • Pray against the occult. According to Tim Svoboda of YWAM’s City Ministries, there are ten times more people in Paris earning a living via the occult than there are evangelical pastors and missionaries.
  • Pray for continued Spirit-led unity among the small number of Christians in Paris so that darkness is defied.
  • Pray that Parisians would see the light of Christ and that they would be repelled from the dark ways of the occult.

Pray for spiritual  breakthroughs:

  • Pray for spiritual strongholds to be broken. Pray that the people of France would turn their hearts toward God as things are being shaken and the question is being asked, “What do we really believe?”
  • Pray for the new wave of spiritual movement toward Christ in Paris. Pray for heads of families, single people, the elderly, students, Muslims, Jews, and others.
  • Pray for the church to “look” French.
  • The number of evangelicals is growing. Pray for continued multiplication of churches and for safe places to worship in every one of the 20 arrondissements, or administrative districts in Paris.
  • Pray for church denominations that are currently dead in Paris, but should they awaken have huge potential.
  • Pray for the North African Muslims and for the missionaries that work amongst them. The ratio of missionaries to Muslims is very low.
  • Pray for God to send missionary workers to France. Pray for effective training to prepare these workers for the spiritual climate and challenges in Paris.
  • Pray for the relatively small number of Christians in Paris to show the love and empathy of Christ to this city in crisis situations, whether it be refugees, terror attacks, homelessness or people in everyday life situations.
YWAM Paris staff

YWAM Paris staff

Pray for YWAM Paris:

  • Pray for affordable housing for students and staff.
  • Pray for provision of a building to use as a hub that accommodates most of the housing, community areas, dining room and lecture rooms needed for staff and students.
  • Pray for favor for YWAM Paris with visas.
  • Pray for opportunities for YWAM to get more involved with refugees in Paris. Pray for new connections and strategic people who have solid information.
  • Pray that God would open the door for YWAM to partner with more organizations and churches in Paris.
  • Pray that YWAM’s capacity would expand for the needs and opportunities of Paris and that resources would become available for training and for reaching the poor and needy. Pray for God to send innovative people and ideas to respond to the numerous people groups, needs and opportunities Paris offers.

Researchers Patent Drug Treatment to Boost Protein Production in the Brain

As reported in Twin Cities Business on November 23rd, a team of researchers has patented a drug treatment that stimulates the production of progranulin (PGRN), a protein necessary in maintaining the health of the brain’s frontal and temporal lobes. Deficiencies of PGRN have been linked to both FTD and ALS. The researchers — led by the Mayo Clinic’s Rosa Rademakers, who received the Potamkin Prize earlier this year — also patented a benign virus designed to deliver the drug to the brain.

Emerging Treatments Could Apply to Multiple Forms of Dementia

Researchers are hard at work developing treatments for FTD, Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, writes Dr. Howard Fillit, executive director of the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF), in a Nov. 22 Huffington Post article. Dr. Fillit briefly explains numerous other forms of dementia in the article, explaining that many share the same physical causes (including rogue proteins in the brain, impaired blood flow, and neuroinflammation). He highlights several researchers currently investigating promising treatments that target these causes. Among them are Dr. Mari DeMarco of the University of British Columbia and Dr. Keith St. Lawrence of the Lawson Health Research Institute in Canada, both of whom received 2015 Drug Discovery Grants from AFTD and ADDF to support their research.

Transforming Spheres of Society

In 1975, Loren Cunningham sensed God giving him a message about God’s desire to see transformation in every sphere of society. Shortly thereafter Loren found out that other Christian leaders had sensed God giving them essentially the same message. Those leaders included Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, and author Francis Schaeffer.

Celebrating the spheres at YWAM Together 2016

Celebrating the spheres at YWAM Together 2016

At the YWAM Together 2016 event held in Kansas City in September, a diverse group met which included YWAM staff, YWAM alumni, and friends of YWAM working in business, education, government, entertainment, and media. More than 2,000 people participated. They had the opportunity to dialog about the spheres at a more practical implementation level than YWAM has done before.

Said David Hamilton, one of YWAM’s leaders, “God wants every nation to be able to experience the transformative impact of the kingdom of God in every dimension of its cultural life, shaping every sphere of society.”

Beth Senn, a YWAM alumni who worked with YWAM in Perth, Australia, commented, “Everyone is called to impact the spheres of society. If you hold that God is the creator and sustainer of all things then the farmer who milks the cows, the driver who delivers the milk, and the cashier who sells you the milk are all God’s agents to feed and care for the world.”

Working in media at YWAM England

Working in media at YWAM England

Please join us this month as YWAM’s global prayer day, called The Invitation, focuses on praying for the seven spheres of society: family, economics, government, religion, education, media, and celebration. Please pray with us any day this month, or join us on the actual prayer day, Thursday, November 10.

As you prepare to pray, take a moment to look over this article, God Revealed Through the Spheres of Society, by David Hamilton.

Pray for the Spheres of Society

Pray for understanding:

  • For God to teach us how to righty represent him in all of these different arenas of society.
  • For understanding among Christian workers of the importance of all spheres for building God’s kingdom.
  • For a spirit of teachability regarding spheres among YWAM staff, alumni, and friends.
  • For the YWAM family to be grounded in God and His Word so that we bring biblical value to the spheres.
  • That new tools available for understanding the spheres from a biblical perspective will help us work more faithfully in God’s purpose for every societal sphere of influence. (For one example, see the SourceView Bible.)

Pray for transformation:

  • For more effective discipling of the nations through a better understanding of the spheres.
  • For YWAM’s University of Nations training for the spheres.
  • For effective partnerships and relationships between traditional YWAM and spheres, and between people from one sphere to another.
  • For wisdom for YWAM leaders as YWAM grows at a faster pace due to sphere ministries.
  • That our multiplication would be a movement generated by the Spirit of God.
  • For a communication infrastructure that will effectively support the anticipated growth of YWAM in all the spheres.
  • For members of the YWAM family to be in the world but not conformed to it.

Mayo Clinic Researchers Patent Genetic FTD Test

Researchers have patented an innovative molecular test that can measure a genetic mutation linked to both FTD and ALS. Members of the Mayo Clinic’s Neurodegenerative Diseases Lab — led by Leonard Petrucelli, chairman of the neurology department at the clinic’s Florida location — received approval for the patent on September 20. The molecular test (also known as an immunoassay) is able to diagnose properties of the mutated gene C9ORF72, which causes the most common genetic forms of FTD and ALS. Dr. Petrucelli sits on the scientific advisory board of the FTD Biomarkers Initiative.

Virginia Woman Shares Her FTD Story on WWBT-TV

Peggy Plagemen, a Virginia woman who lost her husband to FTD, shared her story with WWBT-TV (Richmond) in a segment that aired October 12. Peggy told reporter Sarah Bloom that Wayne, her husband of nearly four decades, began to exhibit “rather bizarre behavior” — a hair-trigger temper, a lack of concern for personal hygiene, a penchant for sneaking out of the house to see other women. Wayne’s strange behavior tore the couple apart. Finally, after multiple incorrect diagnoses, a doctor told Wayne he had FTD. He died a little over a year ago, and, Peggy told WWBT, “I’m still grieving for him.” Peggy, a veteran of AFTD’s Food for Thought campaign, said she shared her story to help raise awareness of FTD. Later, on October 6, the Delaware State News published an article by Eugenia Thornton, whose husband of 41 years has FTD. Thornton writes that her husband, a “career soldier [who] once was a leader of men,” is now almost completely reliant on the caregiving staff at the veterans’ home where he lives. Thornton writes that she marked World FTD Awareness Week by holding a Food for Thought event in Dover, Delaware.

A Year of Thanks

Praise God that He is our creator, our father, our redeemer, our protector and He answers our prayers! In October 2015 YWAM launched The Invitation, inviting the whole YWAM family to pray monthly on the same (or similar) day. We have prayed for global topics like ending Bible poverty, refugees and Muslims. We have prayed for areas where YWAM does not have a presence such as the Horn of Africa. And we have prayed for local matters such as universities and YWAM property. The Lord has answered many prayers during this past year and to mark the one-year anniversary of The Invitation we are inviting you to spend time thanking God for a year of answer prayer.

Our Year of Answered Prayer

Some of the highlights from The Invitation’s first year include:

  • Through a video produced for The Invitation, a YWAM leader shared his vision of God’s Grace Flowing to the Muslim World. We prayed for this in January. The video has been viewed by over 10,000 people on Facebook and YouTube.
  • Many reported a greater understanding of Islam and thus a greater ability to love Muslim people, after praying for the Muslim world during June and July (30 Days of Prayer for the Muslim World).
  • On the day when we prayed for YWAM properties, YWAM’s Mission Builders International received an unexpected check for $40,000 to pay down their mortgage and YWAM San Diego, USA signed papers to buy four acres of land.
  • Many prayed for areas where YWAM does not have a presence including the Horn of Africa, Maldives, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal and Bangladesh (December).
  • Through the prayer focus on YWAM Ships (April) YWAMers reported a greater awareness of what God is doing through this ministry. Outpost Panama praised God for bringing Making Waves to minister to various Indian tribes.
  • We prayed to End Bible poverty last October and in March gave an update that showed the progress being made in translation and distribution of Bibles by YWAM locations including Blantyre, Malawi, YWAM Chiang Rai, Thailand and YWAM Kona, Hawaii.
  • YWAM Quebec, Canada was led to pray for reconciliation between French Canadians and English Canadians in February when we prayed for governments and symbolically, they washed the feet of one another.
  • YWAM leaders and various others groups were in session during several global prayer days and included The Invitation in their time of prayer.  Specifically, during Europe DNA Infusion, the participants prayed for YWAM property and set up donation and prayer stations for each base represented that was currently in the middle of a building project.
YWAMers pray in South Sudan

YWAMers pray in South Sudan

Prepare to Pray:

  • Ask God to reveal answered prayers for you and your community—those you have seen and those unseen.
  • Review this list of topics for The Invitation from the past 12 months and list prayers that God has answered at a global, local and individual level: Ending Bible Poverty (October 2015 and March 2016), Local Immigrants (November 2015), The Horn of Africa (December 2015), God’s Grace Flowing to the Muslim World (January 2016), Local government (February 2016), YWAM Ships (April 2016), YWAM Property (May 2016), 30 Days of Prayer for the Muslim World (June into July 2016), Refugees (July 2016), YWAM Together (August 2016), Universities (September 2016)
  • Meditate on these verses and note specific ways that God has answered your prayers through the years: “But we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise,” Psalm 79:13. “In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever,” Psalm 44:8. “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ,” 1 Corinthians 15:57.

Give Thanks and Pray

Samuel Zwemer Prayer QuotePray:

  • Referring to the lists you made during time of preparation, praise God for the prayers that He has answered during the past year at a local, area and national level.
  • Make a list of the people that you and your community are thankful for and praise God for them. Mention each one in prayer.
  • Pray for proper understanding of what God has done for you and the eternal promises He has for you.
  • Pray for YWAMers, including DTS students, to:
  • always be offering up a sacrifice of praise to God (Hebrews 13:15)
  • have lips that acknowledge His name (Hebrews 13:15)
  • praise Him with a whole heart (Psalm 86:12)
  • have full belief in God’s promises (Romans 4:20-21)
  • give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
  • fear Him and praise Him (Revelation 19:5)
  • always give thanks for everything (Ephesians 5:20)
  • make requests of God with a spirit of thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6)

Take Action:

  • Tell someone other than a close friend, coworker or family member why you are thankful to God.
  • Produce a praise report. Add the report to your website, post it on social media, or send it to supporters, parents, or others. For an example, see this praise summary from YWAM Yosemite.
  • Identify a way for your you or your community to keep track of answered prayers—a wall, a journal, a blog, or some other form. Set up a process for keeping it current. Use the list during worship time on a regular basis.
  • Plan a praise event. See the idea for the Make Jesus Famous Worship Festival held by YWAM North Cascades, Washington.

How We Prayed

September: Universities

  • YWAM Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela fasted one day and sent a prayer report noting Bible verses and key messages they received from God.
  • Several requested prayers on Facebook for specific universities, including: Arturo Prat University in Iquique, Chile; The University of Newcastle in Australia; University of the South Pacific, Laucala campus; University Utrecht in the Netherlands, and others.

At the 10th International Conference on Frontotemporal Dementias, held August 31 to September 2 in Munich, speakers presented results from three clinical trials. Though conference attendees were disappointed in the initial results, their overall outlook was hopeful. “Now that we know the major pathways involved in frontotemporal lobar degeneration, we know what to target and what to look for in trials,” said conference co-organizer Manuela Neumann of the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE). There was widespread agreement that FTD trials are becoming more rigorous and biomarker-based, improving the odds of seeing a treatment effect. Read the full ALZFORUM article here.

Frontotemporal Dementia: The Hard Work of Pushing Toward Trials

In the last 10 years, the science of frontotemporal dementias has exploded, thanks to big openings in the molecular pathologies behind these disorders. Rapidly growing interest among academia and industry was on display at the 10th International Conference on Frontotemporal Dementias, held August 31 to September 2 in Munich. While the presentations spanned the range of basic to clinical science, there was a dominant theme: a collective push toward trials. Read the entire article here.

What Happened in Kansas City

On September 10, when the last song was sung at the YWAM Together meeting in Kansas City, we had praised God and batted multicolored, polkadot balloons (that represented the spheres of society) round the huge tent for an hour or more. Then I breathed a great sigh of satisfaction and began to ask people what the event had meant to them.

So much prayer, thought and hard work had gone into YWAM Together 2016. Was it worth it? Thousands of people, young and old, had travelled from scores of nations and from across North America. A lot of money and effort had been spent. Was it worth it?

People responded to my question immediately and with enthusiasm. Some words and phrases came up again and again: “Wonderful!” “The best EVER!”  “This has been historic!” “Such an intensity of God’s presence!”  “I am so glad I was here to witness this; we will never be the same!”

A Kiss From God

Worship at YWAM Together in Kansas City

Worship at YWAM Together in Kansas City

From my perspective, and many said the same, the most outstanding thing about this week has been the nearness and intensity of God’s Presence. Though that is very hard to describe, I will do my best. We didn’t just worship; at times it seemed we had been lifted into God’s dwelling place. On the Thursday morning, someone had a strong impression that God wanted to “kiss us.” She went on to prophecy about the Lord showing us His affection, empowering us, going before us and carrying us on a wave of His power. It seemed like a genuine word from God at the time, but the morning and the afternoon passed and it hadn’t happened.

That evening Mike Bickle, leader of the International House of Prayer (IHOP), spoke to us and God “kissed us!” What he said was important and very affirming, but something else was more important. He spoke of the 17 years of non-stop 24/7 prayer in Kansas City IHOP and how that is just a very small part of a massive wave of intercessory prayer all over the world. He made it clear that from the beginning of IHOP in Kansas City, God had connected their hearts to YWAM. They have faithfully and intensely prayed for us all these years. During the week of our meeting they served amazingly and spent many hours praying for YWAMers who went to their prayer rooms. He also personally took on a faith challenge to recruit one million intercessors for the task of completing the Great Commission.

His message was as if the Lord was saying to every one of us, “I love you deeply and your sacrifices have not gone unnoticed in heaven.” Worship and intercession followed and, though it was getting late, no one left the tent and that is when the most significant moment of the week occurred. We were held in a heavenly embrace that was much more than affection and affirmation. It seemed that we had stepped into a new era of God’s power and enabling—of us, and of YWAMers everywhere. We will never be the same.

I have heard and read several prophecies about this new era of God’s presence and enabling and now it has begun. In most of those prophecies there is also an accompanying theme of rising opposition. In the midst of our joy and jubilation, there was also a sobering sense of greater discrimination, persecution and martyrdom of Christians all over the world. In all that lies before us, we can expect His nearness like never before.

A Sense of Belonging

As Psalm 133 states, where there is unity, God bestows His blessing. Unity with the prayer movement was just one thread that ran through our gathering. We also had senior leaders of several Bible Societies with us: Roy Peacock of the American Bible Society, Michael Perreau of the United Bible Societies and James Featherby from the British and Foreign Bible Society. We also heard from Paul Eschleman of the Jesus Film, David Garrison, author of A Wind in the House of Islam, Scott Carroll the break-through Bible archaeologist, and many more—all of whom expressed their sense of belonging to us and us to them. We are one movement! Commitments were made to make the Bible available to all people of every language, and hundreds of languages without the scripture were taken on by YWAMers and YWAM bases. (Although 93% of the world’s population have the Bible available in their mother tongue, the remaining 7% are made up of over a thousand languages.)

Another thread was not so obvious, but is nevertheless very significant. David Demian, who has a remarkably fruitful ministry over the past three decades, was also with us. His calling to a ministry of reconciliation was learned many years ago in fellowship with YWAMers. I have seen how much God is using him to heal the wounds within the Body of Christ and overcome historical divisions. God called him to “prepare the bride of Christ” many years ago and wherever he goes the Holy Spirit draws His people together across chasms of alienation. In this past few years he, and those who work alongside him, have experienced the healing power of God between Japanese and Chinese and Koreans, between Han Chinese and the many small tribal groups that have suffered at the hands of the majority and across many other long-standing divisions.

Because I helped oversee the program, I saw how the Lord used David Demian to help guide us into the place where we could receive all that the Spirit wanted to give. He wasn’t on the stage much, but he was vital to all that God did. He and the ministry he leads were joined together even more closely with our global family.

Discipling the Spheres

We also crossed another threshold of great import. For several years, I have had a recurring picture in my spirit. I see YWAM in a large room, but with a doorway and threshold. That threshold is the entrance into a room with no limitations—as if we are stepping out of a confining building into the great outdoors.

This is what I believe that picture means. Much of YWAM Together 2016 was organized around the spheres of social influence. It is well known that God gave Loren the list of seven spheres (he called them “mind-molders” at first) in the 1970s. You might say that was a divine signal that God wanted us to add Matthew 28:18-20 to our foundational calling of Mark 16:15. Our initial calling was to “go into all the world and preach the Good News,” but from the beginning, God wanted us to expand that commission into making “disciples of all nations” and that requires transformation in all the spheres of social influence.

Over recent years, the Lord has graciously moved us away from seeing ourselves as an organization and towards being a global family (or movement). That progression is now mostly complete so we have the freedom to convene our wider family which includes everyone who shares our values and vision and who is relationally connected. So, for the first time, we broke into “sphere tracks” where our family members who are called to education, celebration, economics, government, family, or media could join with those called to the church/mission sphere to explore God’s ways in all aspects of life.

David Hamilton has worked with hundreds of others over many years to produce an app that enables users to read the scriptures from the perspective of the spheres. We celebrated its launch on the first day. What an immense achievement! It is the SourceView app which is available without charge from either Apple or Android App stores. (It includes the SphereView feature until November.) This amazing digital tool enabled each of the sphere tracks to begin the process of studying scripture to discover much more about what the Bible says about each sphere and how they relate to one another. They identified key values and sought God about the way ahead.

Now we hope and pray that YWAM gatherings everywhere, whether local, national, regional or otherwise, will convene those who consider themselves to be part of the family from across all spheres.

Crossing a Threshold

There is no doubt that we have been growing in numbers and in fruitfulness over recent years, but it is still “the days of small beginnings.” Nearly seven years ago, we began to receive prophecies that 10-fold growth is just ahead of us. That is not about raising the profile of YWAM, rather it is because “the harvest is ripe and the laborers are few.” Crossing this threshold to welcome our family members in all the spheres will be part of the fulfillment of that word.

Finally, as if to underline the unprecedented unity among Christians, Pope Francis sent two video messages to YWAM Together 2016. In the first one, he encouraged us to continue to work to get the scriptures into the hands of all people everywhere. In the second, he reminded us that the current refugee crisis is a great, unfolding tragedy and he commended all who work to ease the suffering and help them settle and integrate into their host nations.

What a week we had! Videos of the sessions and wide-ranging interviews are, or will soon be, available on the YWAM YouTube channel. We have crossed the threshold and it is a new day!

Pray for Universities

As the university school year begins in many places, we invite you to pray for universities. Specifically, pray for university students near you and for YWAM’s campus ministries around the world. YWAM has more than 90 campus ministry locations in countries across the world, such as Nicaragua, Tanzania, and Cambodia.

University World News reported in 2012 that the total number of students around the globe enrolled in higher education was expected to double to 262 million by 2025. Many of these students come from restricted-access nations. They are tomorrow’s world leaders.

Reaching Students at Sunchon National University in South Korea

Reaching Students at Sunchon National University in South Korea

According YWAM campus ministry workers in Madison, Wisconsin, “The university is a key doorway for the Body of Christ to reach and teach the nations – especially through ministry to international students from creative access nations.”

To get a picture of campus ministry in YWAM, see YWAM Thailand’s university ministry page (pick Campus Ministries from the menu on the right), or view YWAM Madison’s campus ministry, or watch this video of a young man who came to Christ through YWAM Boston’s campus ministry.

Also, take a moment to think about universities in your area, and ministries to university students that you might know about. Most likely, many students near you come from countries far away. To get a picture of international student mobility, take a look at this interactive map. It shows where students go and where they come from in each country of the world.

Pray for Universities

Pray for universities and students near you

  • Pray for access to the Bible for all university students.
  • Pray for university professors and staff and that they would come to know the Lord and develop a biblical worldview.
  • Pray for college students to make time for worship and ask that our Father would grant them rich times with Him.
  • Pray for wisdom for university students to do well on tests, papers and projects and bring glory to the Lord.
  • Pray for solid relationships between students and their parents and for a heart of obedience when students are home.
  • Pray for healthy relationships for university students and that believing students would shine the light for unbelievers.
  • Pray for purity in thought, word and deed.
  • Pray for students to embrace God’s will for their lives.
  • Pray that the whole campus from the powerless to the powerful be reached with the whole gospel.
  • Pray for a biblical worldview to permeate universities through: discipleship schools, small group Bible studies, seminars, and conferences.
  • Pray that God would raise students who receive Christ today into future leaders in their nation.
  • Pray for the planting of campus fellowships and churches amongst the most unreached immigrant people groups and international students in universities. Pray that those students would be empowered to reach their own people throughout the world.
  • As a community, pray for God to reveal opportunities for campus based ministry in your local area.
YWAM Mongolia's university student ministry

YWAM Mongolia’s university student ministry

Pray also for YWAM’s Campus Ministries:

  • Pray for YWAM’s Student Mobilization Centre. The mission of the Student Mobilization Centre is to mobilize university students of all nations on every campus worldwide to God’s purposes for their lives in knowing Him and making Him known through their life’s work.
  • Pray for potential student interns and YWAM locations to be linked together through YWAM’s Converge service. Converge is an online missions mobilization tool, a searchable registry of internship opportunities.
  • Pray for the equipping of new YWAM missionaries through focused training schools, such as the School of University Ministries & Missions.
  • Pray that many respond to Christ’s call to universities around the world.

Take action, and get involved with university ministry near you:

  • Engage university communities both near you and in other countries. Mobilize students to serve and learn about issues of poverty, disease, illiteracy, impure water, human trafficking, domestic violence, drug abuse, homelessness, at risk youth, etc.
  • Reach out to international students at a university near your YWAM location.
  • Set aside a regular time to prayer walk at local universities.
  • Pursue opportunities to partner with YWAM campus ministries. Invite a university ministry team to your location for ministry orientation or host a university ministry seminar at your base to learn how to interact with universities.
  • Sign up as a host with YWAM’s Converge service to get pre-qualified student interns for your YWAM ministry.
  • Share on YWAM’s Facebook page, post a picture and add a comment about how you prayed.

Brain Atrophy Patterns Support Distinct Subtypes of Frontotemporal Dementia

FTD Symptoms range from sluggish apathy to obsessive compulsion, and numerous genetic mutations and neuropathologies can underlie each person’s disease. Variation in behavioral symptoms may be explained by degeneration of specific neural networks, according to a study published in the July 18 JAMA Neurology. Researchers led by Bruce Miller at the University of California, San Francisco, reported that some atypical social behaviors—including recklessness and failure to pick up on common social cues—correlated with specific patterns of neurodegeneration in two different neural networks in the brain, while other behaviors showed no such relation. Pray for YWAM’s Big Gathering

At the beginning of September, the YWAM family will gather in a way it has never gathered before. Not only YWAM’s workers but also YWAM’s students, alumni and friends of YWAM are all invited to come. It promises to be one of the largest and most inclusive gatherings in YWAM’s history. The participants will consider what it means to see God’s purposes in all the spheres of society: family, economics, government, religion, education, celebration, and media.

Worship-YWAM-CrowdThe event will happen from September 4 through 10 in Kansas City, USA. It’s called YWAM Together and there is still time to sign up if you want to come. Just go to the YWAM Together website and register.

You are also invited to pray with YWAM for our big event. The focus of YWAM’s global prayer day for August, called The Invitation, is the YWAM Together gathering. You can pray with us on the prayer day, August 11, or on any other day that works for you or your community.

The Significance of This Gathering

Our international YWAM gatherings have always been times of seeking God’s face, hearing fresh words from Him, allowing our hearts to encounter Him, renewing and establishing friendships and gaining new vision for our individual and corporate roles in discipling nations. Repeatedly the Lord has challenged our hearts and led us corporately to covenant with Him on issues on His heart when we have gathered before Him. Over the last two years in particular, these events have gathered momentum and brought us together to new places in Him.

YWAM Together Kansas City 2016 LogoHeading to the YWAM Together gathering in Kansas City in September we sense many streams are converging. Representatives of the whole tribe of YWAM, YWAM alumni, and partners in prayer and mission all will come together to seek the Lord and His global purposes for us. This will indeed be a holy convocation if we are humble and seek His face.

To that end, whether you are able to attend or not, we invite you to join us in focused prayer leading up to and during the gathering.

We invite you to pray for:

1) Presence of God

In 2014 at a YWAM leadership gathering in Singapore, participants sensed God speaking about seeking God and His presence above all else.

Pray:

  • That this will be a time when God deals with His people and that we may have revelation and grace to know how to live godly lives in a post-modern world with a clear conscience (2 Peter 1:3-8).
  • That the entire gathering will be marked by God’s presence, and that we will hear the word of the Lord, especially as we face sobering challenges of discipling the nations in the critical times we live in.
  • That prophetic discernment will be clear leading up to and during the event.
  • That God would have His way among us. Pray that the event will be well-planned, but that we would be sensitive to the Holy Spirit when He wants to redirect us or change the order of the agenda.

2) YWAM Family

Pray:

  • That YWAMers will fully recognize the value of maintaining relationship and partnering with their alumni, the ones who are currently active in the discipling of nations in all seven spheres. (For more information, see this page on spheres of society.)
  • That YWAM staff and YWAM associates will be “family” as we reach and disciple the nations and take the Kingdom into the spheres.
  • That the missions movement and the prayer movement will connect and synchronize more than ever.

3) Spheres

Pray:

  • For revelation, insight and unity as sphere groups come together.
  • That we will grow in our understanding of the power of influence and authority given to the spheres of society.
  • That participants will receive greater clarity in their roles in various spheres.
  • That our appreciation of the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit would grow as we apply God’s Word to the whole of life.

4) Delegates

Pray:

  • For a sense of family and of belonging—for all nations and all generations.
  • For preparation of hearts. For a heart of humility, prayer, fear of the Lord, and a willingness to change where necessary.
  • For grace and unity as many expressions of delegates working in prayer, missions, business, government, and education converge.
  • For those who are unable to attend to still to be able to connect through prayer, friendship and watching the event on live stream.
  • For safety in travel arrangements, and for visas for those who need them.
  • That all would encounter the Lord and many would receive greater clarity for God’s call on their lives.
  • For the full complement of delegates to be released.
  • For children and teenagers to be transformed through the children’s program.

5) Leadership

Pray:

  • For unity in the event eldership (Founders’ Circle members, plenary speakers, conveners).
  • For guidance for the conveners of various spheres and breakout sessions.
  • Pray for David Hamilton and others who are preparing resources.

6) Logistics

Pray:

  • For the Kansas City team as they host and prepare for us—especially Mark and Karen Anderson and Barb Livingston as they coordinate logistics.
  • For teams going to Kansas City to assist in running the event, pray for grace, energy, smooth communication, joy and a heart to serve.
  • Pray for the full release of resources—finances, equipment, hospitality.

Take Action:

Volunteers having tea with refugees in Lesbos camp

“Come to Lesbos, we need your help….

“The camp is bulging at the seams. Eight more boats full of hopeful and desperate people have landed in the past week only to be crammed with more than 2,000 others into an already full detention camp.

“God is moving. Only last week a family was baptized after crying out to God on their crossing, being received in the camp, and then connected to a local church where they met Jesus and were then baptized in the Aegean.

Refugees-Kids-Lesbos

Children in the Lesbos camp

“The food is very basic and at subsistence levels. Milk is rationed. Our volunteers continually rise to the challenge making sure everyone is fed while defusing tension and keeping an atmosphere of love. People are bored and having someone share joy and hope, listen to their story, and play games with the kids helps the time slip by. There are so many opportunities to serve these wonderful people but the workers are few.

“The Greek military expects the dam to burst and the boats to flood across the Aegean once more. The volunteer numbers have dropped and at the same time leadership has reinstated 24-hour cover to help provide the right level of support to the family compounds as well as the units for vulnerable adults and unaccompanied children. YWAMers regularly take double shifts and expend the last reserves of energy to serve these people.

Lesbos-Fence“I am appealing to you from Lesbos – please stop whatever you are doing and ask God if He would have you come. Tomorrow we are already 11 people short for the late shift and in the coming weeks we are looking at similar challenges. Would you also stand with us in prayer as we seek God for all that we need in order to serve here?”

For more information and to make the necessary arrangements to come, please email the Lesbos team.

Pray for Refugees

This month, YWAM invites you to pray about the global refugee situation. Please join us as we pray for people who have had to leave their homes because of war, persecution, natural disaster, famine, or lack of jobs. We will also pray for those that are impacted by refugee movements: government leaders, families that are left behind, local residents, and YWAM workers who are ministering to refugees all over the world.

Many statistics about refugees show the tremendous needs for prayer. According to the United Nations, there have been record numbers of displaced people and refugees in recent years, over 60 million estimated in total. Those that flee across international borders are known as refugees (estimated to be over 16 million), while those that flee but stay in-country are known as internally displaced persons. Statistics reported by the New York Times give an insight into the lives of refugees:

  • Approximately half of the refugees are children. A very high percentage of these people are unaccompanied minors: 90% of the migrant children who have recently arrived in Europe via Italy were unaccompanied minors. Over 7,000 unaccompanied minors crossed from North Africa into Italy in the first 5 months of 2016.
  • More than one million refugees crossed the Mediterranean Sea last year.
  • Last year there was a record 5,400 deaths of migrants attempting to cross borders and already in 2016 there are more than 3,000 dead.
  • Tens of thousands of people are in limbo living in squalid camps in border towns.

As YWAMers and other Christians attempt to care for the practical needs of refugees, they are also seeing a time of great harvest of people coming to Christ. One YWAM worker at a refugee camp in Greece worked to give out food and clothing and noticed an absence of public Islamic prayer in the camp. Over tea with a group of men, he asked about this. One man said, “For us, religion is finished. We want to have the freedom to choose like in the West.”

The YWAM worker said in general he has noticed an unusual openness to talk about faith and Jesus. He said, “It is very easy to share your faith in the camp. There is a desperate need for any kind of hope and talking about the peace that Jesus has given us often brings a spark of hope in their eyes.”

Lynn Green, one of YWAM’s leaders, reported, “There has never been a time of greater harvest. Time and again over recent decades, we have said ‘the nations are coming to us,’ but it has never been so overwhelmingly true. Will God’s people be swept up in the fear and protectionism, or will we reach out to reap the harvest?”

Please pray with us for God’s comfort for refugees and for God’s purposes to prevail.

Pray for Refugees

As you prepare to pray, watch this short video created by World Vision about praying for refugees:

Also, for more insight into the lives of refugees, watch this video created by the documentary filmmaking school in YWAM Harpenden, England called “Sunday in the Calais Jungle.” It tells the refugee story of a camp in Calais, France called “The Jungle.” It is home to more than 7,000 refugees:

We invite you to pray on July 14, the prayer day for YWAM’s The Invitation, or pick a time that works best for you or your group. Here are some suggestions for how to pray for the needs of refugees:

  • Pray for refugees that are traveling with risky health situations: pregnant mothers, women who have just delivered, day-old babies and others who are travelling who are sick or weak.
  • Pray for safety and protection from smugglers who often steal passports and other items from refugees.
  • Pray for greater freedom in the home countries of refugees so they don’t have to flee and so they can choose whom they will worship.
  • Pray for refugees who are lonely and for their families left behind.
  • Pray for government leaders to find workable solutions to refugee issues associated with displacement, transition, etc.
  • Pray for the hearts of residents in areas where there are refugee camps to be accepting, especially of the children in need of schooling and medical services. Refugees are often misunderstood. Pray for God’s people to be non-judgmental and to hear their stories.

Pray for YWAM workers and YWAM locations and their work with refugees:

  • Praise God for the many YWAM teams that have responded to the needs of refugees. Pray for YWAMers to be led by the Spirit so that God’s purposes will prevail.
  • Pray for God’s love to break down walls as the good news is preached.
  • Pray for more teams to be sent. Pray for workers for long-term ministry opportunities such as with unaccompanied minors.
  • YWAM Ireland is teaching Iraqi, Syrian and Palestinian refugees about forgiveness. Pray for open hearts and changed lives.
  • YWAM Perth, Australia provides counseling on a Facebook page for many Syrians suffering trauma, loss, grief and other issues. Pray for impact in the lives of people who view the material on this page, and pray for more Arabic-speaking staff to work in this ministry.
  • YWAM Middle East runs a school for Syrian refugee children in a neighborhood where they are not welcome. Pray for peace and comfort for these children and praise God that the children are responding to the loving instruction they are receiving from YWAMers.
  • YWAMers in Lesbos, Greece have been given significant responsibility by local leaders over entire refugee compounds. Pray for wisdom as they care for unaccompanied children and families. Praise God for open doors, healing and salvation in the midst of chaos and brokenness.
  • Several YWAM locations in Germany are serving refugees. One location is providing a home for teenage refugee boys who have nowhere else to stay, teaching German classes, providing social activities and taking the boys to church. Pray for wisdom for these young men.
  • YWAM Sicily provides clothing and a discipleship program for refugees coming to their city, many of whom are from Africa. Pray for God to lead them.
  • YWAM Dalarna, Sweden has begun discipling Afghans who have shown an interest in the gospel. Pray for good relationships.
  • YWAM Calais, France ministers to Sudanese refugees from the Darfur area. Pray for continued favor with the local leaders and that these leaders would have changed lives due to a new faith in God.
  • YWAM Pittsburgh has purchased a building to help them reach out to some of the 20,000 refugees in their city. Pray for them and watch this video to see their refugee ministry:

How We Prayed

In June, we participated in 30 Days of Prayer for the Muslim World:

  • YWAM Dunham, Quebec spent time searching their own hearts and repenting about how they have condemned Muslims in the past. They have chosen to love Muslims.
  • YWAM Seamill, Scotland prayed for the Muslim world throughout Ramadan. One day they prayed for 76,000 Muslims in Scotland.
  • YWAM Kings Kids, Brazil committed to pray for the Muslim world.
  • YWAM Uruguay committed to pray each day in their devotionals and schools. They are also promoting 30 Days of Prayer for Muslims to churches in Uruguay and they planned a celebration and time of intercession toward the end of Ramadan.

PSP Research May Offer Insights into New Treatments for Other Neurodegenerative Diseases

About 100 times rarer than Parkinson’s, and often mistaken for it, progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) afflicts fewer than 20,000 people in the U.S.—and two-thirds do not even know they have it. Yet this little-known brain disorder that killed comic actor Dudley Moore in 2002 is quietly becoming a gateway for research that could lead to powerful therapies for a range of intractable neurodegenerative conditions including Alzheimer’s and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a disorder linked to concussions and head trauma. Pray for Muslims During Ramadan

Starting June 6, YWAM invites you to pray for Muslims as an act of love during their holy month of Ramadan. The June topic for YWAM’s prayer day, called The Invitation, is 30 Days of Prayer for the Muslim World. Please download a booklet and join us.

The 30 Days prayer focus began at a gathering of YWAM’s international leaders in 1992. They were meeting in the Middle East and in a time of prayer for the region God spoke to them in a powerful way. This time resulted in the Red Sea Covenant which was a commitment these leaders made on behalf of YWAM. 30 Days was born out of this commitment and began as a small prayer guide, produced by YWAMers largely for YWAM. Since then, 30 Days has grown each year and now includes an estimated 500,000 participants across the wider body of Christ, including several agencies and churches that gather content, translate and distribute the 350,000 prayer guides. 2016 marks the 22nd anniversary of 30 Days.

Refugee-woman30 Days coincides every year with Ramadan (June 6 to July 5 this year) which is an important month of fasting and religious observance for Muslims. The purpose of 30 Days is to call Christians to make an intentional and respectful effort during this period to learn about, pray for and reach out to Muslim neighbors.

In the Muslim world today, we see encouraging answers to prayer. In the book A Wind in the House of Islam, David Garrison notes that the greatest movements of Muslims turning to Christ have happened in the 21st century. One of the leaders of YWAM’s work in the Middle East reported in a video that he sees the grace of God pouring out to Muslims in unprecedented ways. He attributes that flow of grace largely to the increased prayer from prayer efforts like 30 Days. Please join us in prayer to be part of God’s work.

How to Get Started

To begin, download the 30 Days prayer guide from the 30 Days of Prayer website.

30 Days booklet from 2009

30 Days booklet from 2009

Also, take a moment to like the 30 Days Facebook page. When you do so, you will receive short summaries of the prayer topics each day during the 30 days of Ramadan. You can share these summaries with others in your community.

Determine how you and your community will “remember” to pray each day. Examples from previous years include prayer bracelets and playing drums at midday to call a YWAM location to prayer. Some locations pray at the beginning of their day and others pray just before lunch.

How to Pray for Muslims During Ramadan

Read the page each day from the 30 Days prayer booklet or read the topic summary from the 30 Days Facebook page or website. Pray through the suggested prayer points.

You can also pray for themes mentioned in the prayer guide booklet:

  • Pray for Muslims who are questioning their faith, that they will meet others who have walked that journey and found it led them to Christ.
  • Pray for those Muslims who decide to follow Jesus, that they will find fellowship and peace within their new faith.
  • Pray that the millions of unreached immigrants leaving their homelands in search of a new life may find new life in Christ there.
  • Pray for peace in areas where people are having to flee their homeland.
  • Pray for new Muslim believers to grow in unity, encourage one another in fellowship and love and to be lights for others.
  • Praise God for the significant movements of Muslims to Christ in this century and pray that the pace of these movements would heighten and expand.
  • Pray for fellow Christians to resist the temptation to exchange hatred for hatred, hostility for hostility.
  • Pray that God will lead you to Muslim individuals whom you can love in Jesus’ name.

Also, pray for YWAM and for the 30 Days team:

  • Pray for God to reveal his plans for YWAM locations around the world in reaching Muslims. Pray for provisions for ministries that are focusing on Muslims.
  • Pray for 30 Days distributors—churches and organizations that translate, print and distribute the guide in many different ways—for wisdom and safety. Praise God for growth in participation in areas known for Muslim/Christian conflict, specifically, Eastern Europe and West Africa.
  • Pray for more 30 Days participants in the United States where many Muslims have moved.
  • Pray for wisdom, creativity and perseverance for the workers who create the prayer guide.

As you pray, take action:

  • Share the 30 Days website with others often during the 30 days period. The prayer guide is available in 23 primary languages, some with 30 Days apps.
  • Talk to leaders at your church about 30 Days and organize a prayer campaign with your congregation.
  • Donate to 30 Days.
  • Mark your calendar for next year early enough to purchase posters, guides and other resources for 30 Days. Ramadan falls May 27 through June 24 in 2017.
  • Sign up to get the 30 Days emails.
  • Write the names of Muslims you know and any Muslim communities near you. Think about how you can bless them and serve them.
  • Share on YWAM’s Facebook page, post a picture and add a comment about how you prayed.
  • Find YWAM on Twitter; search for #praywithywam and tweet about your prayer time or post a picture.

How We Prayed

Praying at the YWAM DNA Europe meeting

Praying at the YWAM DNA Europe meeting

Here’s what happened through YWAM’s The Invitation prayer day last month, May 2016. We prayed for YWAM properties:

  • On the global prayer day, Mission Builders International received an unexpected check in the mail for $40,000 to pay down their mortgage.
  • At the YWAM DNA Europe meeting, 350 YWAMers from 59 nations started praying on the global prayer day (May 12) and continued into Friday. They thanked God for the properties He has provided and they prayed for 14 properties where finances are needed to bring about God’s plans.
  • YWAM Mazatlan, Mexico and YWAM Queenstown, New Zealand posted prayer requests on Facebook regarding property needs due to growth of their ministries.
  • YWAM Bluefields, Nicaragua was encouraged to pray for their own property even though they are a new location. God has led them to property that costs $195,000. Please pray with them for God to provide as they know they can’t do it on their own.
  • YWAM Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA prayed that they would be led by the Spirit as they plan and prepare for various ministries and programs they will run in a new building that they are purchasing. They also noted, as other locations did, that God’s timing was perfect for The Invitation for May.
  • YWAM San Diego, California, USA reported that they signed the papers to buy four acres of new land on the global prayer day.
  • YWAM Nigeria reported that praying for property was very timely for their location.
  • YWAM King’s Kids, Brazil noted they were grateful for the Portuguese translation of The Invitation and prayed for YWAM property.
  • YWAM San Francisco, USA prayed and requested other YWAMers to give thanks that God miraculously provided initial funds in 2014 for their property. Please pray with them that God would retire their remaining $2.17 million debt quickly. They have ministered from this location for 20 years which they rented prior to purchasing.
