Praying for Moscow

Join YWAMers around the globe in praying and hearing from God. He is inviting you!

This month, please join the YWAM family as we pray for Moscow. With an estimated population of 12 million in 2016, it is the sixth largest city in the world and northernmost megacity. The primary religion is Christianity with the Russian Orthodox Church being the most popular and Muslims accounting for 14% of the city’s population. Moscow is a major political, economic, cultural and scientific center in Russia and in Europe.

Some say that Moscow is a city of contradictions. On one hand, Moscow has provided economic stability for many migrants coming from other parts of Russia and former Soviet republics in recent years. Moscow also received worldwide praise for its hosting of the 2018 World Cup for soccer last summer. Historically, Moscow has attempted to leave behind the communistic days of Lenin and Stalin.

Listen to the letter here

But on the other hand, Moscow has been involved in recent disputes with both some neighboring nations and the West. In recent years Moscow lawmakers have targeted evangelistic efforts and media boundaries limiting freedom of religion and freedom of the press. It is also a city with significant drug and alcohol problems, a high prison rate and much human trafficking.

According to Blair Carlson, formerly with the Billy Graham Evangelical Association, “The challenges of Moscow speak to the enormity and complexity of large European cities. We need to pray for the unity, vibrancy, and muscularity of the church in the great cities of Europe.”

Please join with YWAM’s global prayer day, called The Invitation, during the month of December to pray for Moscow. You are particularly invited to pray during our prayer day, December 13. If you only have a few moments to pray, please pray for unity and vibrancy in the church in Moscow.

Prepare to Pray:

Take some time to sit quietly with this image of an open door, painted by Andrei Zadorine. If you are praying with a group, consider projecting the image onto a screen so that everyone can see it clearly. What do you notice about the way the light from the open doorway floods into the dark room? Think about the nature of light, and the way even a small light can chase away darkness.

Read aloud from Psalm 24:

“Open up, ancient gates!
Open up, ancient doors,
and let the King of glory enter.

“Who is the King of glory?
The Lord of Heaven’s Armies—
he is the King of glory” (verses 9-10)

There are many doors that God might want to open up in the context of Russian society. Where are the places He is longing to shine the light of His presence? Turn your attention from the darkness you might perceive, to the hope and strength of the light of God, made known through the life of Jesus. Keep your focus on His light as you go into prayer.

Let’s Pray:

  • Pray that God would soften the hearts of Moscow’s people to accept Christ and that He would open doors for these believers to be discipled in a free and open environment.
  • Pray for the Central Asian immigrant community. They come from restricted-access Muslim nations to Moscow in search of economic improvements. Please pray for those believers who have made these immigrant workers their mission and that in the end the immigrants would find Christ.
  • Pray against human trafficking. Real statistics are hard to come by, but they seem to suggest that as many as 80,000 girls could be working in the sex trade in Moscow, many of them against their own will.
  • Pray for the Russian Orthodox and Evangelical church. Less than 2% of the population attends church at least once a month. Revival is needed!
  • Pray that the Russian Orthodox Church would be open to renewal and unity with evangelicals.
  • The alcoholism rate is one of the highest in the world and there are a large number of drug addicts. Pray that Christians can be a stronger influence as they reach out to those in bondage due to addiction.
  • Death rates have been higher than birth rates in Moscow for years, and its population growth is now solely dependent on migration. Pray for transformation of its people through Christ. Pray that the result is a lower abortion rate and fewer drug and alcohol related deaths.
  • We normally think of the Russian people in Russia, but there are dozens of indigenous ethnic minorities scattered about this massive nation who have never heard the gospel in a way that they can understand. Pray for believers from Moscow to go to these unreached ethnic minorities comprising much of the population.
  • Pray for prison ministries as Russia’s prison rate is one of the highest in the world (825,000 prisoners throughout the nation).
  • Pray for God’s wisdom for government leaders and other leaders presiding from Moscow.
  • Pray for Christians living and working in Moscow as conditions have changed in recent years, making Russia a less open nation.
  • Pray for positive transformation socially and culturally of Moscow as a megacity.
  • Many reporters and fans have praised Moscow for its hospitality and handling of the 2018 Soccer World Cup last summer. Christian workers and churches were able to seize this opportunity to hold evangelistic events where people could watch the games. Praise God for how He used the 2018 Soccer World Cup for evangelistic purposes.
  • Pray for openness for evangelism. Russia is now listed as one of the worst countries in the world for religious freedombecause of its ongoing crackdown against foreign missionaries, evangelists and other religious activities.

Take Action:

  • Learn about working in megacities such as Moscow: https://www.ywamcity.org/get-involved and https://www.ywamcity.org/recources and https://www.ywamcity.org/media
  • Visit Moscow. Make sure your trip includes a historical tour of Red Square, a visit to a Russian Orthodox church and a guided tour with someone who understands the cultural challenges in Moscow.
  • Identify a short-term mission opportunity in Moscow.
  • Moscow is a thriving international business hub and many foreigners find work as “guests” in Moscow. Explore business and expat opportunities to work there.
  • Read about the history of Russia and the Communist leaders of the Soviet Union/Russia who have presided from Moscow (Lenin, Stalin, Khrushchev, Vrezhnev, Andropos, Chernenko and Gorbachev) to gain further understanding of how to pray for the people of Moscow.
  • Commit to pray for Moscow on an ongoing basis. Subscribe to news feed(s) to stay current on conditions in Moscow so that your prayers can stay fresh.

Praying for North Africa

Join YWAMers around the globe in praying and hearing from God. He is inviting you!

“Jesus is God. It is the truth. I believe!” was the voice message left by a local North African last month. This simple declaration of faith is evidence of the deep workings of the Holy Spirit in North Africa. Seeing North African friends come to a saving faith in Jesus is often a long, hard fought battle entailing years of fellowship, food, storytelling, evangelism, Bible reading, and desperate prayer before the Lord! It is no small victory for the Kingdom of God when one believes. Please join us this month in prayer for the people of North Africa.

In 1991, the YWAM North Africa Regional Center was established in Southern Spain as a strategic springboard to North Africa. Predominantly Muslim, with little Gospel influence, the North Africa region includes Algeria, Chad, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger and Tunisia.

Listen to the Podcast

YWAM’s North Africa Regional Center runs a DTS and a secondary frontier school called Foundations In Intercultural Studies (FIS), as well as, offering hospitality and member care for long term workers in the region. The team is focused on sending new workers and teams into the region where there are over 130,000,000 unreached peoples.

Isaiah 60:1a – Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.

Please join with YWAM’s global prayer day, called The Invitation, during the month of November to pray for North Africa with us. You are particularly invited to pray during our prayer day, November 8. If you only have a few moments to pray, please pray for more workers to come to North Africa bringing the glory of the Lord with them and pray for the hastened work of the Holy Spirit in North Africa.

(Please note: All North African nations are very sensitive and have security risks. Careful attention is needed to communicate about YWAM’s work there. Please be aware that stories, news, or prayer requests from the region should not be posted online or shared in public settings, including churches and YWAM meetings that may be recorded.)

Prepare to Pray:

Ahead of your prayer time, please weigh out 250 grams of uncooked short-grain white rice. If you were to count them, this will be approximately 10,000 individual grains. Place the rice in a dish or container. Add to your white rice 20 uncooked brown lentils or grains of black wild rice, that can be visibly distinguished from the rest of the rice. (See picture below.)

As you prepare to pray, allow participants to run their fingers through the grains in the dish. Invite them to consider that across North Africa, evangelical believers find themselves comprising no more than 0.2% of the population. Imagine how widely dispersed these believers are, how difficult it is for them to gather to support one another, and how challenging it is to establish discipling communities. At the same time, bring to mind the 98.8% of the population who may never meet a believer who can tell them the message of Jesus.

As you seek to enter into this experience – possibly of isolation, or remoteness – you are invited to bring the emotion, longing or need you identify into your time of prayer. May your prayers bring with them the gift of identification with and empathy for the people of this region.

Pray for North Africa:

  • North Africa needs workers for the harvest! Pray for more workers. (Matt 9:37-38)
  • Pray for the peoples of North Africa to call on the name of the Lord. (Rom 10:13)
  • Pray that believers (local, YWAMers and other workers) will abide in Jesus so that they will bear much fruit. (John 15:4-5)
  • Pray for unity of YWAM teams, local believers, churches: whether expat, local, official or small house groups. (John 17:21)
  • Intimidation and fear are big strongholds in North Africa. Pray for our teams and believers to operate in the opposite spirit. (1 John 4:18)
  • Pray for believers in North Africa to stand strong when they face hard times or persecution. (Daniel 11:32b)
  • Pray for workers living in security-sensitive areas to find their identity, both hidden and shown, in the Lord.
  • Pray for those in captivity.

Kolkata – Prayer

Friday, September 7, 2018

YWAM’s Big Event Leads To a Bright Future

YWAM’s big event in Thailand, called YWAM Together, has come to an end, and our future as a mission is bright. We are coming to a season of rising up, taking the original vision of YWAM and seeing God enlarge it even more.

Many aspects made this gathering special. We heard from YWAM leaders young and old, who came from many different countries and had stories of faith in action to inspire us. We shared our own unique journeys with others. We spent extended times of prayer for each other and our nations.

“Our dream and prayer was that the attendance, the worship and every aspect of the YWAM Together program would reflect the diversity of our global YWAM family, and especially the majority world. That dream was fulfilled this week and I believe it brought great joy to God’s heart!“ said Phil Porter, national director of YWAM Thailand.

Something else that made this gathering special was the full day dedicated to reaching out to the city of Pattaya. Almost 4,000 people representing 100 nations and 77 languages came together into 325 teams, went to 208 locations, and carried 110,000 Gospels of Luke to give out. Our YWAM family was joined by over 500 volunteers who live and work in the city of Pattaya. It was an outreach that broke bondages with obedience, love, and unity despite large diversity.

“Shine Pattaya! What a day it has been,” said Nella Davidse, local coordinator for Shine Pattaya Outreach. “So many people reached with the love of God. Tens of thousands of Bibles handed out. Thousands of school children heard the gospel. Many people received salvation and many got healed. Thanks to YWAM for being obedient to God’s calling and pouring so much into the city of Pattaya.”

You can still be a part of the blessing! Most sessions are available online and can be viewed by following this link, https://www.youtube.com/user/ywam. Although YWAM Together 2018 has officially come to an end, the new season we are entering into is only just beginning.

Celebration at YWAM Together

With an explosion of music, culture and color, the opening ceremony for YWAM Together 2018 took off on Sunday night in Pattaya, Thailand. Over 3900 YWAMers have arrived from around the globe to celebrate and hear from God and His call for our mission.

Together we enjoyed a parade of children representing many different countries, we saw traditional dance and performances from Thailand and Hong Kong, and we took part in lively Thai worship. We heard from our founders, Loren and Darlene Cunningham. The night proved to be a wonderful start to a promising week together as a mission and as a family.

Now as the week progresses we are enjoying a jam-packed schedule full of fellowship, worship, networking, prayer and time in God’s presence, as well as time with YWAM elders, and a whole day dedicated to reaching out to the city of Pattaya on September 5.

You can follow us on Facebook and Instagram Please tune into the livestream here.

We are looking forward to seeing what is to come for us, not only this week but in our future as a mission. Don’t miss the opportunity to join in with this historic event in YWAM!

YT 2018 – less than 70 days to go

Mobilization for Victory

Dear YWAM Family,

In Korea I have often heard my hosts for a meal say, “Do you want Airforce, Army or Navy?” Meaning, “do you want chicken, beef or seafood?”

At YT 2018, we may have all these 3 options and vegetarian available!

From a spiritual perspective we need the mobilisation of all 3 of these factors to be effective, and working together for breakthrough. Firstly, we need to win the battle in the unseen realm through prayer. Then to have people preparing the way on the ground in location (this is happening now). Lastly, we need those who would come from afar to bring fresh impetus and supplies to enable victory.

INVITATION TO PRAYER

One intercessor writes: You are not just contending for an event but planting seeds deep into the soil of this nation, city and into YWAM for the future generations. Battles are won through the spirit of thanksgiving and praise instead of heaviness.

Would you & your team join us in being part of the airforce, praying His prayers with His heart over His people and stand in the gap for the fullness of God’s purposes to be revealed AT THIS TIME!

The leaders and elders are calling for a 21 Day of Prayer and Fasting before and or during the event. More will follow on this later.

TRINITY BROADCASTING NETWORK (TBN)

A small team of YWAM Associates from TBN will be coming to the gathering to help and gather stories and testimonies from YWAMers working on the frontline across the world advancing God’s kingdom. We urge as many of you as possible to take advantage of this generous offer.

For this, we request 1-2 paragraphs relating your story, and you bringing images, videos (only good quality), sound/music track from your nations or the place you have gone to, to add to the dynamics of each interview.

Please fill in the following form if you have a story to share.

They hope to share the resulting content worldwide and also make it available to YWAM globally. If there are security issues for certain nations, they will make careful consideration of sharing those stories on a public basis.

SPONSORSHIP

We are encouraged by the spontaneous generosity of YWAM bases and individuals helping sponsor others to attend. If you know friends of YWAM who might be in a position to help sponsor those who are in need, yet desiring to come – please encourage them to do so.

SPECIAL AREA CIRCLE TEAM (ACT) MEETING ON SEPT 8TH FOR ELDERS & LEADERS

This is for Area Circle Teams elders and leaders & senior leaders within the YWAM movement. You will need to stay through till 9pm on the 8th of September. Please make sure you have your accommodation booked if you are leaving on the 9th of September.

If you fit into that category or you sense that you’d like to be there, please fill out your information in the link below.

The YT convening team are encouraged by how things are coming together for YT and ‘Shine Pattaya’.

Just 3 months out from YT, 40 pastors and leaders met in Pattaya welcoming YWAM representatives. There was united prayer and a heart-felt embrace from the local Body of Christ to YT and to ‘Shine Pattaya’ on September 5.
A prophetic word from a visiting leader highlighted the impact that this outreach was going to have on Pattaya, Thailand and the world.
We are currently looking at around 250 teams being sent out during ‘Shine Pattaya’.

The opening session for YT on Sunday September 2, will be a special welcome for from the host nation of Thailand. We are delighted that there will be some key leaders joining us for this opening from the Thailand Body of Christ.

YT will be a feast of unity in diversity representing the YWAM Movement. Throughout the gathering there will be worship teams from many nations and translation in many languages.
We have scheduled YWAM Founders Loren & Darlene Cunningham to speak on the 2nd & 3rd nights of YT. Looking forward to having these living legends of faith, whose ongoing obedience we have all been blessed by.

We are in for a wonderful time together of celebration, worship, testimony and impartation of His Word and Life. Jesus has much in store for every person.

On behalf of the YT 2018 convening team,
David Cole

For those of you have been in YWAM for many years and have been to many gatherings we are praying that you will be surprised and apprehended by the Lord God in new ways. God has ‘much more’ to reveal to you and exploits to be engaged in.

Recently as the YT convening team were meeting together online, Peter a senior elder in YWAM Myanmar, shared an impression he had in prayer. He saw people being touched deeply by the Holy Spirit before they arrived and as they travelled to Pattaya.

The Scripture the Lord has given repeatedly to us for YT2018 was Revelation 4:1 – ‘Come up here… and I will show you the things to come’. May we prepare to join our wider YWAM family with hearts child like, softened by God’s love and eager to meet with Him afresh.

How Billy Graham Helped Me and YWAM through Years of Friendship

By Loren Cunningham

Our YWAM family is praying for Billy Graham’s family and co-workers. We also celebrate his remarkable life and worldwide ministry for Jesus Christ. What a blessing his 99 years on earth were, a true gift from God!

In 1949 when I was a teenager, my dad, TC Cunningham, was one of the many sponsoring pastors of Billy Graham’s tent meeting in downtown Los Angeles. That evangelistic campaign launched him nationwide.

Later I was honored to get to know Billy Graham on stage and off, in prayer and at meals in Switzerland, Netherlands, Washington DC, and Hawaii. My family and I were invited to his home in 1974 where we got to know him and Ruth. We were also able to meet four of his children, Anne, Ruth (“Bunny”), Franklin, and Ned.

In the spring of 1974, Dr Graham called thousands of missionaries and ministers from all over the world for the Lausanne Congress on World Evangelisation in Switzerland. He asked even me, an unknown young leader, to speak at one of the breakout sessions of the conference, and included my message in his book, “Let the earth hear His voice.”

During that congress, Graham held a news conference with 150 journalists. One reporter asked, “What is happening spiritually among the youth of Europe?” Graham answered, “Youth With A Mission!” He went on to describe how YWAM had young people spread out all over western Europe, reaching other youth with the Gospel. I knew he was giving us direct help by answering the reporter that way.

Years later I met with Dr. Graham and his close friend TW Wilson in the Graham home in Montreat, North Carolina. That was when Billy (that’s what he asked me to call him) laid hands on me and prayed for me. TW took a photo of us after the prayer time.

Years later after his wife Ruth’s death, I was again privileged to be in his home. I thanked him for what he had meant to me and my life, and to YWAM. Mr. Graham was weakened by age, using a walker. Later I visited with Oral Roberts in his home, to say goodbye. We also had prayer together and then a meal. Brother Roberts, as I called him, asked if Billy had a walker like his? I said yes. Oral said, “I gave that to Billy. He called and thanked me, saying, “I used to have a Ford. Now I have a Cadillac!” Roberts and Graham were friends for years.

My special honor was to serve ten years on the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’s legal board for their radio ministry. Billy Graham was the chairman. There I saw him in another role, as a man of God leading a small group of nine with skill, vision, wisdom, integrity, and humility, always focused on the Gospel.

Through the years, when I as a leader was confronted by a situation, I’d ask myself, “What would Billy do?” When I teach young missionary leaders, I use his examples very often. He was purpose-driven, yet relied on the Holy Spirit. He was a leader of leaders, a man I was privileged to call my friend.

I am 18 years younger than Billy. When I have finished my course and kept the faith, I hope to meet with him in the presence of our Savior.
